PURPOSE:

The primary purpose of the WMAR-TV Internship Program is to augment the educational development of those studying for careers in broadcasting. This is accomplished by creating opportunities for students enrolled in institutions of higher learning to gain experience in a station’s day-to-day operations.

By offering these opportunities, WMAR-TV expects to contribute to the development experience which will serve the needs of new entrants into the broadcasting industry, as well as provide a continuing pool of new talent for the industry.

GENERAL PROVISIONS:

1. Participants will receive no compensation, reimbursement or expenses and they will accrue no employee benefits.
2. Ordinarily, the duration of participation by any one student shall not exceed one semester or other single segment of a school term or related course.
3. Interns shall not serve for more than eight (8) hours each day or forty (40) hours per week.
4. The intern’s performance will be evaluated by the head of the department to which the intern is assigned.
5. Interns may not be assigned specific duties on a continuing basis that would otherwise be performed by regular employees.
6. The principal purpose of the Internship Program is to contribute to educational enrichment, but in keeping with WMAR-TV policies, the station will make every effort to ensure that minorities and women receive a fair share of internship positions.


SELECTION:

1. WMAR-TV will establish selection procedures that are fair and which are calculated to identify those applicants who are likely to benefit most from the experience.
2. The station will announce the program to all colleges and universities within its service area.
3. Qualified students may also be referred by these institutions to the station on their own initiative. Subject to available placement, these students also will be interviewed and rated by the station in terms of their ability, interest and aptitude.


REQUIREMENTS:

Participants must be:
1. at least 18 years of age.
2. enrolled in an accredited college or university.
3. majoring in communications, journalism, broadcast production techniques, business administration, marketing or some other field having a direct relationship to broadcasting.
4. seeking course credit or the equivalent (i.e., master thesis).

INTERN JOB DESCRIPTIONS

Creative Services – Opportunity to write voice-overs, write and produce promos, assist on remote shoots as well as learn many other functions of television promotion. The Creative Services department accepts one intern per semester.

News – Duties include parallel work on the assignment desk with assignment editors, writing copy stories, assist reporters in the development of stories and research story ideas. The News department accepts up to three interns per semester.

Production – Opportunity to make intern aware of different aspects of live television from directing to show preparation including pre-production of video packages, writing, editing and post production. The Production department accepts one intern per semester.

Public Affairs – Students interning in the Public Affairs department will learn: script writing for public service announcements and public affairs programming; research techniques for current issues and events; production of public service announcements and public affairs programming and community relations. Assignments will be given based on the student’s skill level. A strong interest in writing, television production and public relations is needed. The Public Affairs department accepts one intern per semester.

Sales – Work with research and sales. Assist in development of sales promotions and presentations. Break out rating books and develop selling points. Assist in post buy analysis. Participate in sales promotional activities which may be outside normal working hours. Plus, learn other day-to-day sales and traffic functions. The sales department accepts one intern per semester.

Sports – Serve as assistant producer for the 11pm newscast during the week, and on our 6pm, 11pm and Sports Extra shows during the weekend. Daily duties include: “charting” sports events, selecting sports highlights, scriptwriting, research for feature pieces, and the production of sports remote “live shots.” Each intern is required to work 3 days a week, with a minimum of 4 hours each day. The Sports department accepts up to two interns per semester.

Graphics – Opportunity to create artwork for on-air as well as print. Chance to learn the AVA-3 paint system, stat camera, ESS-3 and Mac Quandra 900 (including Freehand, Quark, Pagemaker, Photoshop and Macromind Director software). The Graphics department accepts up to two interns per semester.

Sales Operations (Traffic) – Learn the tasks of the sales support operation. A great introduction for anyone who is looking to make a career in broadcast sales and marketing. Experience the operation that actually takes the completed sale and ties advertiser commercials to program inventory. The Sales Operations department accepts one intern per semester.
