Months after Hurricane Harvey rocked Texas, some communities are still recovering, and a local fire department is trying to help.

The Laurel Volunteer Fire Department donated a used 2008 ambulance to the East Montgomery County Fire Department in Texas. Firefighters from the station right outside of Houston are flying to Maryland and then driving the ambulance back to Texas on Friday morning.

Laurel fire said they wanted to help their fellow firefighters after seeing the devastation that the recent hurricanes had to their area. When they called Texas and Florida to see how they could help, a Texas fire station expressed they needed an ambulance.

The Maryland fire station said they just added a new ambulance, so they could retire their old one and donate it. They also sent a cash donation to the Florida State Firefighters Association.

The East Montgomery FD plans to use the vehicle as multi-use:

  • Mobile command post (4 cities, 4 PD’s, 1 FD, and 144 sq miles)
  • Special Response Team (SRT) crew hauler
  • SRT tools and equipment hauler
  • Crime Scene Unit
  • Tactical Medics Program for SRT
  • Rehab Unit
