A man was arrested Friday morning after allegedly ramming an airport shuttle bus and then leading police on a police chase reaching over 115 mph.

Maryland State Police Troopers say the incident started shortly after 2:45 a.m. after a passenger on an airport shuttle bus called police saying someone rammed the bus and was waving a handgun in the area of I-295 South at West Nursery Road.

Troopers found the car, driven by 48-year-old Pete Sommerfeldt, in the area of I-295 South at I-195 East near Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport before zipping onto southbound I-97, reaching speeds around 115-120 mph. A trooper in the area of I-97 and Farm Road was able to scatter stop sticks on the ground, puncturing the front tire of the car.

Even though the tire had popped, Sommerfeldt continued driving around 60 mph along I-97. The car then continued to eastbound Route 50 before exiting onto Rowe Boulevard in Annapolis, and continued throughout the city of Annapolis stopping at a dead end road on the grounds of the Naval Academy.

Troopers from the Glen Burnie and Annapolis barracks were then able to arrest Sommerfeldt and took him to the Anne Arundel Medical Center where he is undergoing an examination.

Troopers checked the areas of the highway where Sommerfeldt was driving in an attempt to find a handgun the passenger in the airport shuttle reported, but nothing has been found at this time.

Multiple traffic and criminal charges are pending his release from the hospital. There were no injuries reported as a result of this incident and it remains under investigation.
